I have read alot by now and planning to purchase all the stuff next weekend.. jus for base fertilizer, I read that vermixompost is good but tank takes time to cycle, jus confused about base ferts. Here is what im planning.. tank 28x15x15 inch
1) bottom laterite sand around 2cm thick
2) cocopeat powder 3/4th to 1 inch thick
3) vermicompost 1cm thick
4) 1.5 to 2mm gravel with hand full of crushed corals.
I want ro make a self sustaining tank with jus diy co2 dosing no liquid ferts... more runners like hc, dhg, dwarf sag & glosso... fishes will be just neon tetras and endlers and cherry shrimps. .. thats it...

Re: Vermicompost in planted tank substrate?
you are hoping to have most of the nutrients come from vermicompost? I have made my own years ago, the results were good but the nutrients turn the water brown. one reason for that might have been that my layer of gravel over it wasn't that deep. I don't know how good the commercially sold vermicompost is. But after 6 months, all vermicompost runs out unless you add stuff like dolomite and muriate of potash as well....
btw, I have read many posts of yours on www.indianaqauriumhobbyist.com
Nice to see you here, wish you post in the introduction thread sometime.

if you mean to ask if ammonia is an issue in a vermicompost tank, it is not. any particular reason for asking?
