we use this kind of filtration a lot back home, even for huge tanks. its the cheapest way...and once the mat is covered by moss, you can't see it any more.
unfortunately i was not able to source a mat like this in delhi so far.

advantages: low cost, huge huge area for beneficial bacteria, much more than any canister can provide, powered by air or power head (in case of CO2 induction)
disadvantage: it is a pure biological filter, so it is not able to filter out tiny floating particles

Like strokes of genius, it is as simple as it is elegant. I have known about it since 2009, and have pics of it stored in my fishy file to inspire me to find a sponge to replace the German mat. Tried in lots of places, and gave up when even Laxmi nagar did not have much to offer.

I admire sponge filters and have four Hydrosponge types currently. Any power head can be used if u have the mat, the best part. This type of biological filtrations goes very well, because i belive in regular water changes for particulate matter and other stuff.

Glad to know Bappa has got it this time.

What price did u pay for each mat, Bappa? Please convert to Rupees before telling!

The one that separats a tank into two, seems best to look at, but difficult to find a mat at all, leave alone that fits your tank cross-section perfectly. The corner type is the best idea i think, for us in India.
