How to propagate Aquarium plants?

Propagating plants in aquarium is not a difficult task. Most of the plants multiply themselves in favorable conditions. Although propagating several plants is very difficult.

Plants can be propagating by two ways:

1. Sexual Propagation: Some aquatic plants reproduce themselves through seeds or spores. For example Barclaya longifolia, Aponogeton madagascarinis, Bacopa sp. Etc. These plants need favorable water parameters, proper lighting, and nutrients to produce flowers in the tank. When a plant reproduces a flower, make artificial pollination through a brush of finger. If plant produces seeds successfully, collect and store them to produce new plantlets.

Reproducing plant through seeds
I have successfully grown Barclaya longifolia through seeds using following technique.
a. Take a vessel. I had used earthen pot for this purpose.
b. Make a bed of mud/soil of atleast one inch in the vessel.
c. Now put seeds over the soil. Temperature should be around 23 degree celcius.
d. Spray water daily over the soil to keep it wet. Keep away vessal from the reach of birds.
e. After germination of seeds, increase the water level on daily basis according to the height of plantlets.
f. When plants height reach around 2 inch, move them in aquarium.

2. Vegetative Propagation: In vegetative propagation, a part of plant is used to reproduce new plant. This can be done by a stem cutting or any other part of the plant. They are genetically identical to parent plant. It is the easiest method to propagate aquatic plants.

a. Runners: Runners are the daughter branches produced by the parent plant as the base. The new plant gets nutrients from the parent. After root development, it can be completely apart from the parent. For example water lettuce, vallisneria, Cyrptocoryne sp., Echonodorus, Sagittaria sp. Etc. produce new plants through runners. Replant a runner by following method:

* Cut the runner from the parent through a sharp knife or scissor.
* Put the root under substrate properly.

b. Cuttings: Most of the stems plants can be reproduce through cuttings. Simply cuttings can be get from the top of the plant.
* Cut a stem with several nodes by a sharp scissor.
* Now remove the leaves from the lower part.
* Push the cutting into substrate.

c. Rhizomes: A rhizome is a root like subterranean stem which continuously produces roots and shoots. Most of the rhizome based plants are propagate through the process of division.
* Divide the rhizome with a sharp knife.
* Tied the parts of rhizome with a wood, rock etc. Now it will grow like as standalone new plants.
