My experience with Contro Soil is very good. I have been using it for 10 months in my 2.5 ft tank.

I tried red soil with soilrite and river sand toppings. And now using ADA AZ-2, and its much better, especially water gets plant friendly.

I voted for 'Soil direct from nature', as I have experimented with it and it worked fine. Diana Walstad Method FTW!
