Searching for solutions to remove Chlorine and Chloramines

I'm trying to find a cheap solution to removing Chlorine and Chloramine. And need your help in arriving at a solution based on facts and knowledge posted here

Here goes...

We know that water contains 2 things Chlorine and Chloramine

Branded Products for example (Easy Starter from Azoo) mentions that their Dechlorinators remove ammonia, chloramines, residual chlorine and heavy metals. But the price is 250 bucks for 120 ml. I have been avoiding buying those Rs 10 bottles sold by LFS as dechlorinator and been using sodium thiosulphate crystals to remove chlorine, We dont know how much chlorine is added in the BMC water but most of us use our judgements to adding these crystals to water. I add 4-6 crystals in a 24 L bucket of water while its filling up and this is stored for a week before using it. Assuming this will take out the Chlorine.

Next is Chloramine

Read this on chloramine
http://www.iuhoakland.com/Chloramine.pdf
See Page 2 point 5

It says that Potassium Metabisulfite (aka Campdem Tablets) removes chloramine
Wikipedia also confirms
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campden_tablets

But Potassium metabisulfite splits Cloramines into two components Chlorine and Ammonia
Read the coloured post

Then I read about AmQuel what it contains and reached Wikipedia...An Aquarium Wiki site
http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Water_conditioners
and it seems that Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate will detoxify both clorine and chloramine completely. This in found in products called AmQuel, ClorAm-X, and Ultimate.

Now if we have to find a solution we will need to have to create a Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate mix with water ie ?grams to mix in ?ml then what will be the dose for our water in the aquariums.

Solution 1
-----------
I came across this recipe online for water bed conditioners
http://www.ehow.com/how_4441156_make-wa ... erbed.html

8 cups distilled water (8 cups = 1.8 ltrs as per Google)
2/3 cup sodium thiosulfate
2/3 cup sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate

After Mixing one of the above the dosing in water is { Edited in Blue : Because Mixing both was not mentioned on the site and I realised that it wont be necessary to use both as point 2 on the site mentioned sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate as another option}
1/4 cup liquid per 100 gallons

The equivalent dosing would be
15.6 ml for 100 Litres
3.9 ml for 25 Litres
1.6 ml for 10 Litres

This seems to be one solution. What do you think ?

Solution 2
-----------

If AmQuel is actually Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate then a dry solution can be used to treat water to remove both chlorine and chloramine.

Read Dry Amquel
http://www.who-sells-it.com/cy/aquatic- ... lsize.html

Create a solution using the following calculations

32 grams of Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to treat 1000 litres
3.2 grams of Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to treat 100 litres
1.0 gram of Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to treat 31.3 litres

Now if I want to follow the liquid treatement of AmQuel for example which is 5ml per 10 Gallons (37.8 Litres) then what concentrated solution can be made to achieve this ?

Rajiv will your chemistry professor friend be able to help ?

Thanks

Pio, thanks for sharing.
I read Chemistry upto XII level. One of my close friend is a lecturer of Chemistry in Guhawati. Before years I was with him and brought Anti-Chlorine. He told me about the Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to remove Chlorine.

Really nice share.

Hi Rajiv

Can you recommend quantities to create a concentrated dosage of Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate mixed with water so that we can dose mild quantities in our aquarium water ?

Thanks

Never checked about the amount of Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to make it concentrated. But will reply with proper information in 2-3 days after talking to some of friends.

Rajiv - I think you forgot about this

Anyway I found this recipe online for water bed conditioners
http://www.ehow.com/how_4441156_make-wa ... erbed.html

Recipe
8 cups distilled water (8 cups = 1.8 ltrs as per Google)
2/3 cup sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate (2/3 cup = 75 grams)
Dosing
After Mixing the above the dosing in water is
1/4 cup liquid per 100 gallons.
The equivalent dosing would be
15.6 ml for 100 Litres
3.9 ml for 25 Litres
1.6 ml for 10 Litres

Even when this is used to soak your grindals food ie oats the water that is used and sprayed on the cocopeat if treated with Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate it will remove ammonia. Ammonia bulidup in cocopeat is the primary reason why most hobbyists grindals turn into microworms. Ryel has tried this. He used a branded bottle of Seachems dechlorinator. But branded bottles are expensive.

Therefore we must source this and split it amongst hobbyists.
