Good Luck with your first marine tank Scorpio!
Let's see if your flair for aquatic plants spreads to growing and propagating sea anemones

Re: Deep Blue:: Anemone Tank
That is informative indeed.juanico wrote:thanks for the explanation.jack wrote:MMLR is man made live rock
@ rajeevji congrats on the marine welcome to the beautiful side of marine hobby and plus expensive lol
Lighting is not enough for the anemone plus is the tank cycled ??
Why does the tank looks soo cloudy in the pic ?
Is the substrate new ??
but man made LR is a contradiction itself. LR's are dead coral rocks, highly porose, full of micro organisms...the actual filter in a marine tank.
the micro organisms can be only developed in months-years long soaking in the sea or a matured marine tank...everything else has no filtration effect and is NO LR...just a rock.
an anemone requires a matured tank with good LR filtration...i think it is a very hard job to keep it alive for more than just a few months long.
So how long would u say a so-called 'man made live rock' MMLR actually needs to be develop to deserve to be called that? Would 6 months be a satisfactory MINIMUM time frame? Second, is there any way of visually identifying a genuine live rock on sale? Have seen several on sale in the past...

Re: Deep Blue:: Anemone Tank
LR should have coralinealgae, small critters, sponges and other live stuff inside.
How to identify a LR ?
LR should have above mentioned organisms in it
What time should MMLR take to be called LR ?
Depends on the setup that you have. I have seen people/dealers and read that they make their artificial rock and keep it in sea to seed the rock and eventually with time spend in nature those rocks goes live with all stuff of organisms and algae.
Thats make a rock live
This is my 2 cents i might be wrong :p

Re: Deep Blue:: Anemone Tank
agree with jack.
am really not an expert in this whole marine stuff, but during my 2 years of keeping a marine tank i had a lot of interaction with senior marine keepers.
what i remember:
good LR:
- not uniform surface, because naturally grown
- colourful, mainly pinkish from coralline red algae, other colours from other algae, organisms, maybe even baby hard corals, sponges
- smells like fresh sea
- light weight (mostly)
- if you break a piece out of it it should appear light grey inside...with porous surface (inside)
example for good LR: http://www.waterworld.pk/images/Live%20 ... erock5.jpg
bad LR:
- grey colour (outside) most organisms, algae dead already and decaying...its pure poison for your tank
- smells bad
man made rocks:
- uniform surface
- uniform colour (white, grey, brown...depends on the ingredients
- no live on outside and inside
putting MM rocks in a tank, possibly without real LR...most people will agree, that those rocks will never be equal to real LR
real LR is expensive...because of their valuable content

i do not know, there are controversial opinions...some Artificial Live Rock Farms put dead coral pieces (which are initially collected as construction material) back into the sea for 6 months-1 year...but nobody knows if the rocks are as good as original LR...and thats in the seaRomi wrote: So how long would u say a so-called 'man made live rock' MMLR actually needs to be develop to deserve to be called that?
