yes the shutter has to be fast but you cannot go beyond 320th of a second cause thats what your speedlight's sync speed is
although if you'd shoot like chris then you can go as high as you wish as they go with halides to light up the tank
the lens used is a sigma 17-70mm f2.8-3.5 i presume its a good lens, but wouldnt perform very different from what a kit lens like 18-55 from nikon or cannon would as we are working with additional overhead speedlight and that gives you the edge.
