Diatoms Brown algae - Help needed
How to get rid from diatoms, earlier they appeared occasionally only on glass which was quite easy to remove but now they've anchored to many of my plants & affected the plant growth.
I'm doing weekly 50% water change, reduced the light to 5-6hrs also reduced the nutrient dosing.
Also seeing few strands of long hair type algae attached to couple of plants.

Re: Diatoms Brown algae - Help needed
The problem may be due to:
1. Hard water
2. Presence of silicates and nitrates in water.
3. Low circulation of water.

This is an year old setup & I'm using RO water only.
Water circulation is Ok I guess
Don't have test kit to check - presence of silicates and nitrates in water

Same problem I faced used flourish excel and UV filter. UV Filter in the night but stop the external filter in the night and block the water flow so beneficial bacteria will be intact
Also only change 20% water on daily basis.

this way you will be doing more damage to the beneficial bacterial in the external filter.UV only disinfects the water going through it and since most of the bacteria and not free living so it is advisable to have both the filters working all the time or rather have a inline UV filter to save electricity and space.ayksyk wrote:Same problem I faced used flourish excel and UV filter.
