did you keep the light off for the three days when you were out?
One of my friends also did the same and his Downois also melted when he returned. His amazonia and tank was running for over a year.

Hmm...i guess its ammonia to blame as these days amazonia has quite a reputation of leeching things. But yes, there are other possibilities too.not dragging it here...
