You should remove the masking tape immediately after applying the silicone. If you don't , the extra silicone will stick to the masking tape and dry up , making it very difficult to remove later.
The other important thing is to use the right quality and type of silicone. Silicone is generally available in 3 varieties - opaque , transparent and black. The best finish is achieved using transparent silicone. Also , avoid using the cheap Chinese varieties and go for Dr.Fixit or other reputed brands.
For perfect perpendicular lines , ask a local carpenter to build a square or a rectangular frame (depending on the shape you want) using packaging wood (the stuff used to pack fruits and vegetables). Packaging wood is very cheap and can be obtained for free from any subzi mandi (vegetable wholesale market for friends down south !).

2. Now tape the edges of glass so that extra silicon may be removed later.
Rajivji, please explain, I didn't understand in which manner tape has to be adhered to remove excess silicon later

Re: How to make a tank?
Just wondering if 24 hrs will be good enough for the silicone to cure. I have read on some posts that atleast 48-72 hrs are required for proper curing.

Suppose you are using a 8 mm glass to make the aquarium. Now the tape should be fixed more than 8 mm away from the edge of the glass. Check the photograph and look up the edges of glass.bcube wrote:2. Now tape the edges of glass so that extra silicon may be removed later.

Re: How to make a tank?
Guys the drying time depends on many parameters
1. The thickness of the glass. The thicker it is longer it takes for it to dry
2. The temperature. It dries faster in warmer temp.
Just mentioning this as at times in cold weather I hv found the silicone that is covered
under tape joint to be wet even after 24 hrs.
