thats a remarkable journey. well done.
I personally think that there are 2 reason for less discuss first obviously being the price
they are bomb here and secondly the tank size, they need good size tank, 2 ft is usually the most common tank size and its a no no for discuss

36 inch 15 inch 18 inch height is good for a beginning with 6 nos

Keep two only when it is a proven pair otherwise go for 3 or 5 discus.

for breeding purpose the same tank is best .
enough space there to grow and care fry
for just to keep a pair you can do in smaller size of 2 feet 1 feet and 15 inch height
when they grow 5 ~6 inch it need more space to live
