i second the opinion that pH should not be played with, still if one is keeping wild caught cichlids a high & stable pH will be desirable, for flowerhorns no need to increase pH, if you still want to raise it use aragonite sand its not only legal but also does not have any sharp edges like corals, the only issue is its price as its sold for 100rs/kg, i am going to buy it for my tank i few weeks.

Puneet a stable ph will be by far a lot better option. Otherwise with every water change you will have to match the parameters. Still if you want to increase for the kok, go for argonite or crushed coral in filter not as a substrate. Planning this for RA or Anubis?

i think the OP here wanted to increase the ph to increase the fatty deposition in the cranial region of the fish
and it is noted by many FH breeders that a higher ph does help this
but it is also noted that the fish loses its coloration in this process

ph is quite a tricky factor of water chemistry

a higher ph does require lesser nitrites and nitrates in the water and to buffer(retain) this PH for a long time, u will need to increase the General hardness of the water(GH), and that is what calcium does, thats the reason why crushed coral is added to the tank

but there are going to be issues with these kind of setups, the issue is water params change very drastically when any meds are added or if any filter fails, causing ur tank to suffer an ammonia spike and eventually lose ur beloved pets

the best way to keep a FH in good shape is to stimulate a FH with activity for longer hours in a day, such as having a brightly colored fish tank in front of it, having the FH in a brightly colored tank(bright colored substrate, bright backgrounds, well lit tank for atleast 4-5 hours a day), and have good amount of traffic in front of the tank for most part of the day.
the above shall help ur FH be colorful as well grow a good sized nuchal hump(if it has it in its Genes, that is, it is of a good quality).

Happy fish keeping

Argonite would be the best bet.

The FH he has will keep blowing the arognite around choking his filters. According to me best bet would be to add coral chips / limestone chips in a mesh bag and use it in a filter compartment. Puneet what is the current PH approx is it 7 and above? If yes, then no need to raise PH imo.

Can I ask why are you trying to increase your pH level? What is your current pH value?

Peat moss decreases pH Level and makes the water soft.......

it was already pointed out by Rajivji and Zakk too accepted that it was a mix-up of ideas. Fishy.man as a rule writing in bold letters implies that you are shouting or Rude tone and this is not expected from any member of the forum. so please take care from the next time unless you really mean to hurt someone.
