Hi friends,

I wanted to know if almond and banana leaf are the only option in a betta tank?

Has anyone tried any other plant's leaf?

you can try jack fruit leaves
even they work quite well
or you can try small pieces of uncured driftwood
used tea powder


you can pretty much use any dry leaves, but these will not last long, and might not have enough tannic acid

try peat in you filter

cacao leaves have similar effect as almond leaves.
same applies for oak leaves and alder seeds...but do not know if those grow in india

Does this mean that I can literally use any leaf?

Why I am asking this is because I would like the leaf to be smaller or equal in size to the betta itself. I have a scape in mind that would make sense only if the leaf is smaller say not more than 2-3 inch in length...

Hi Keshava, i hope you remember, we met at Vijjy's place.

I want to let you know that trees/plants that yield a milky sap when you break the leaf off, should NOT be used. This 'milk' is usually dangerous and you can see even cattle will not graze on them, forget fish tolerating them. So when you break the leaves for use, observe closely. I have a guava tree in my front yard and its leaves are usable.

If you want small leaf try cutting the leaf and placing in the tank +1 with not using the leaf with milky content its dangerous.

Jack fruit tree leaves are best option for you. Anybody need leaves, I can provide free of cost in next meet.

winter is always a tough time for trees - may be that expains your day at office, Jack
on cutting the leaf - I think that would kill the effect I am trying to create
