what is the role of non iodised salt addition in fresh water

Unread post by kverma2014 »

Hi all
Years back when i started keeping aquarium.my LFS Told me to add some lahori namak i.e. sendha namak
After water change..over the years i have been doing it but there were times when i forgot to put it after water change.I noticed there was no difference in fish health or stress level due to non addition of non iodised salt.
Can somebody pls tell me why do we add this salt and what will happen if we dont add this salt...

I don't know the theory of the LFS owner but adding salt in water prevents Nitrite poisoning. It also prevents some of the harmful bacteria but some fishes and plants do not perform better in the presence of salt in water.

Salt is unsuitable for adding to every tank and every time, just like every single substance in a tank except water!

Loricarids, cories, and many other fish and some plants like echinodorus tenellus, can die of saltiness, especially when abrupt.

I still use salt but as a medicine to treat Ich. It works well with heat treatment.

So make :google your best friend when you don't know when to use salt and when NOT.

Dear Rajiv Ji
gone through this article..Felt like adding a bit of salt is good for fishes.Since I dont keep plants there is no harm anyway..

Atleast now I am aware If I forget adding salt I should not panic...

Due to salt in water a little slime coat gets developed over fish body due to which she is less prone to parasitees

I agree.

But crude salt is more eco-friendly, so i still prefer that.

I use to make extra effort in buying non iodised salt...

The amount of iodine that is there is iodized salt is much below harmful level for fishes... rather i read that it will do more good if you have a planted tank as plants also need a bit of iodine (micro nutrients)...

In fact I have always used iodized salt, whenever needed.
