This seems to be the same cactus we had had for at least 35 years and obtained a cutting from Bhutan. Found it again after a lot of wishing in a nursery by chance barely a month ago, but not sure it is the exacpt same species, since the blooms seem slightly flatter...

Seeing a flower over cactus is always a fruit of hard work.

In my childhood days, I have a good collection of different types of cactus in a rack. But my grandfather thrown away all of those when I was out of station for 2-3 weeks.

Rajiv,

actually a cacti flowers every year and many times each year, you only need to know the right conditions to give (not unlike our aquarium plants and fish)

Vishaal, I know the fact. They are very slow growers.

It must be because some foolish and ignorant people have spread a false belief after the 1950s that Cactus is inasupicious ('apshakun' in Hindi). These people do not know that in Hinduism, the plants regarded as inauspicious are only some native Indian plants that are associated with Tantricism and witchcraft ('Jadu-tona' in Hindi). Cactuses are not Indian at all, they come from North, Central, and South America, and arrived in India with British rule only, fairly recently.

So this belief is not only wrong, but also very ignorant of actual history.

We must make it a point to tell our elders about this, so that they don't worry about bad luck due to them.

Cactuses are fascinating plants that are easy to grow, they have some marvellous flowers, and they need minimal care if, as Vishaal says, we learn the basics of their upkeep.
