Re: Breeding Bristlenose plecostomus
Getting Bristlenose Pleco (a dwarf species complex) in NCR has been very difficult. I started asking the dealers in Anand Parbat in 2010 before i got any results. The odd Bristlenose that came in at random till thenm, was actually uknown to the LFS and were actually sold as ' Longfin Fairy Pleco' (Raja of Bengal Aquarium was selling some under this name)> Raja has L numbers for most Plecos but not for this one. .. The one with Vijjy came in as one of 3 i got from a new LFS in Anand Parbat (in a side lane), can't recall that guy's name, but he promised to call me up when they were available. He did, after about a year. The price was reasonable (for them) at Rs 550 each. I also got one from Neeraj Kumar in West Delhi, same batch as Tarun Java's (Fishyman). Same price too (for juenile fish, one inch body size). So the females with Vijjy come from that stock.
They usually remain around 4 inches (minus fins) and are excellent cleaners of algae on glass walls and rockwork. They can be fed spinach, lettuce, frenchbeans, cucumber slices (all frozen or blanched), making them cheap and easy to keep, ideal for 'vegetarian' fishkeepers . But they should get temps on the right side of 30 degrees celcius. They breed in caves (these terracotta pots were obtained from the local village potter and do great), and are peaceful, interesting, and friendly, though often nocturnal till they learn to trust you.
I hope our inhouse NCR breeder Vijjy can offer a better price, i am sure they are definately healthier than parent stock since the chances of the parents being of different gene pools is high! Parents were purchased from different sources in different parts of the year. ... by different people
They are, like SAE, Ottoicinclus, Amano shrimp, ideal planted tank inhabitants. They are reputed to even leave fish fry alone, forget about eating older fish. They do poooop, tho! But better than dirty algae covered walls, i think
Great thread Vijjy, keep the pics coming!
