Just started with hobby of keeping tarantulas. I had this fascination of keeping these creatures from long time, after moving to SA; while I was searching for pet shops (out of only aqua interest), I stumble upon these creatures and fell in love with them.

Pretoria, is a place where you can see good number of hobbyist in this line of the hobby. I immediately started reading on this subject in order to keep them in parallel to search on good deals on the tarantula. As every newbie in this hobby, I also liked "Mexican Red Knee" (aka Brachypelma Smithi) and got 2 slings of these. They are still small but getting bigger after every molt.

Immediately after getting these 2 slings, I got an awesome deal from a hobbyist who was relocating and I got 2 sub-adults 1 Mexican Red Knee and 1 Brazilian White Knee from him. Following are 2 pics of sub adult Mexican Red Knee.

I will post pics of other tarantulas in coming period.

I'm feeding them mealworms and soft-shell crickets. The feeding schedule for sub-adults is every after 4 days, whereas for slings its every after 2 days.

Is it true that they throw their hair at you if angry? In addition to biting, which i understand in some species is quite poisonous. Though not as much as popular fiction would have it. ..

lovely creatures, undoubtedly. If only they could be trained to hunt for themselves, and return to their boxes like obedient cats...
