These are fish which are termed as primitive fish, that is, these have not evolved from a long time, almost as long as the era of the dinosaurs, hence primitive fishishaan wrote:ok is it a native indian fish
these are found in africa, all polypterus are from the continent of africa and mostly around the tributaries of Nile
these polypterus are upper jawed, unlike many other lower jawed species
these are among the larger growing polypterus, these are supposed to top at 35-36" in wild, in aquaria, with good food and living conditions am hoping for at least a modest 32" or so, but that will take a life time
i got them at the size of 4"+, almost an year ago
and during that time these have grown quite consistently, and are at a good size of 10 - 11"
they are not very finicky about food, will accept anything once they are settled in ur tank, unlike most of the other polypterus they are very active and will keep dancing in front of the tank grabbing attention
the water requirements are quite simple, keep good quality water, keep some amount of current, theres no particular type of substrate, just don't use anything that these might swallow aong with food, sand usually causes compaction in fish which are aggressive feeders
these fish are predatory, and opportunists, so even if ur fish has lived with smaller tank mates for years, theres always that point where ur little fish is disappeared and ur polypterus is a tad fat.
Enjoy Fishkeeping
