a couple of my own shots of the parents

one morning, the females showed some eggs.
they carry their eggs outside their body before spawning. you can see that in the very morning only...by late morning they have released the eggs
Image

they spawn into a wool mop or into moss.
while my killis or corydoras stick single eggs to the mop, the oryzias stick them in small groups to the wool.
they are very keen on eating their own eggs...so you have to get out the eggs immediately after spawning.
i prefer moss instead of a mop...they do not find the eggs in the moss easily.
Image

the eggs take 2 weeks for hatching. so i removed the parents after 10-12 days from the moss loaded breeding tank.
after 2-3 days more the frys started to hatch...its hard to see on the pic, but the eyes of the frys are glowing blue from day 1.

blue moving eyes...
Image

in the meanwhile i lost all my parents due to white spot ick...medicine and also temp+salt method failed to safe them...
my only hope were the frys. luckily they are easy to raise, eat everything they can get.
after 2 months they are about 1" and the males start to show their colours

its a nice and easy to keep fish. small in size, very peaceful and likes to stay in groups.
perfect for planted tanks - in densely planted moss tanks surely frys have a good chance to survive without any special care.

Thanks juanico! I was looking for info like this. My female O. dancena was carrying a few eggs yesterday.

A couple of questions... What did you feed the parents? And is that wool mop the usual killi mop? The one made by wrapping wool around a card, tying it up and then cutting one end?

Edit: BTW great looking fish!

I have a question - my oryzias dancena appear to prefer the top of the tank...they swim near the surface. Is this natural ? I dont have any other fish which can remotely be called aggressive.
