INTRODUCTION
The rainbow fish are colorful freshwater fish found in the southern hemisphere. As their name suggests, the rainbow fish is colored like a rainbow, they are a peaceful fish and make a beautiful addition to a tropical aquarium. Rainbow fish are omnivorous; they feed on small crustaceans, insect larvae and algae Some species stay below 3 cm in length even as adults, while other species can attain a length of up to 20 cm. Rainbow fish belong to a subfamily named Melanotaeniidae Rainbow fish are closely related to the Blue-eyes of the subfamily An additional plus factor with Rainbow fish is that they leave plants alone – they will not eat them nor uproot them Rainbow fish are schooling fish
Most of the Rainbow varieties were introduced by Heiko Bleher,to the Aquarium industry. These fishes are considered as one of the best fish in planted aquarium, they get matured by the 6th month. Most of the females are colorless e.g.:- red rainbow.
Sex identification
How to sex rainbow fish is important. You need to keep an equal number of males and females in your fish tank if you want your rainbows to look their best. Male rainbows need to show off to the female. Males are more colorful. Females are plainer .Most rainbows can be sexed fairly easy since the males tend to develop more vibrant colors and longer dorsal and anal fins.
Dish to your brood stock
For all brood fish protein counts the game, that too animal protein. Live feed is the best feed for brood stock. In practical experience frozen artemia what we get here is not good, the bacterial load is more and the quality too is bad, might be because of freezing problems. de cap artemia which is the best food for brood. Grindal worms will be a good option, but never give only grindal worms, always try to give different types of feed.

Breeding
Rainbow fish belongs to the egg scatters group, like all other scatters this fish too are group breeders make it short, in a 1000 ltr tank you can keep around 200 fish in a ratio of 1:1,but in that tank place a moph or java moss cluster so that the females lays daily between 5 to 50 eggs in between the substrate. Remove the substrate every second day to a new tank, where the eggs will hatch out. Remember to keep a new moph when you remove the moph with eggs.
You have to keep more fish for artificial breeding, because every day 100 fishes may give you only 500 eggs.

What time it took to hatch the egg? Temperature? .PH etc.........?
PH recommendation 7.0 – 8.0Hatching period depends upon the temperature, usually it takes 36 hours, Temp between 24 and 28.this fish can be bred in hard and sweet water. We have seen them breeding in 300 + TDS,and they are doing fine here at TDS 15.
What is the feed for fry?
The spawn is too small, and the mouth size is 60 micron, either paramecium or rotifer is the right feed. In the absence can go for infusoria. If all this is not available go for rotifer powder, which is yellow in color and with the right size and protein contents,
Then change to artimia and finally can start with readymade food pellets.
.

Common diseases and remedies

What kind of common diseases found in rainbow fishes? What are the important measures to be taken in breeding tank and nursery tank for the prevention of diseases?

Fin rot is the main disease seen in this part of the country, also have seen mouth rot, For fin rot FMC is the right choice, and mouth rot Amox in feed. Remember most of the disease starts with a parasite attack, and followed by a secondary bacterial infection and all this happens because of poor water quality. If you have a good biological filter (matured) 90% of the problems can be solved.

Any further clarifications needed?
