Tough algae eaters for dirty tanks

What aquatic critters can eat brown algae diatoms and hair algae? I know ottos can, but they will die with me cause I keep my tanks dirty. Only hardy critters can survive in my care and ottos are delicate fish as far as I know. Can snails eat brown algae? or some other hardy fish?

Try Rosy barbs. They like to eat all types of algae.

can they live with platies, guppies or will they nip their fins?
also the water I use for my tanks (groundwater), is very hard. can they survive that?
