Visit to Georgia Aquarium

Unread post by apuda2010 »

Fellow hobbyists....I happened to visit the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta city today. Needless to say, I spent two absolutely amazing hours in one of the world's best maintained aquariums. The star attraction of this aquarium are 4 Beluga whales and Nandi the Manta ray. If you visit their website, you can see the Beluga whales in real time via a streaming webcam. I had lots of fun, and thought I should share pictures of some of the species and tanks I saw. So here goes....

Here is a shot of zebra shark eggs incubating (literally, since those lights you see are bulbs). You can see the embryos moving inside the sac. This shark lays eggs in shallow water and hence the species is largely endangered.

Image

The red bellied piranha...

Image

This is a school of trout. Massive circulating pumps create high water flow in the tank as these fish are mostly found in moving water.

Image

A freshwater tank. The usual fauna - Otos, Rasboras, Rainbows etc.

Image

A crypt...

Image

One more freshwater tank. This one was almost 4 feet tall, you can see the Vallisneria enjoying the height...

Image

MAAASSSSIIIIVVVVEEE paludarium to house a very unusual creature - two albino alligators. You can see them on the top left.

Image

This one is also a paludarium. The turtle on the left is the Yellow Bellied Slider turtle.

Image

I have never seen such a beautifully constructed paludarium.

Image

Spotted Gar..

Image

Tanganyika tank. I think there must have been atleast 200 individual fish in this tank. You cannot see all of them here.

Image

This one is a stunner. The way this tank is made is very unusual.

Image

Peppermint shrimp. These guys just dont like posing for pictures.

Image

Simply stunning....

Image

Baby rays. I touched this one - the skin is soft as velvet.

Image

The big boys...this is a species of fish called the Jacks.

Image

I hope you enjoyed this pictures as much as I did seeing these in front of me. The picture of the Beluga whales....well...that one is in my mind, I did not capture a photograph of them !
