Leaves as Water Softener

Ground water in my area is slightly hard which has been preventing me from keeping soft water fish so far.
But now I want to keep shrimps etc and I was looking on the web for easy and affordable ways to soften water.
I came across a blog, which suggested keeping leaves and pieces of wood submerged in water for some days and it will reduce hardness. :?
How feasible is the idea, for long term regular water changes...

I understand but what I want to know is, can I maintain a regular supply of naturally softened water using this method.
Like keep some driftwood\leaves in a bucket of water for a few days and viola...soft water, or does the process takes longer?
I want to keep some soft-water handy, incase I need some quick water change. :)

if ur source water is hard thn u can store water and can use driftwood , almond leaves there , it won't take much time but depend upon water quantity , chemistry , amount of driftwood and leaves ,for exact PH value u need to test water , u can observe change in color of the water it become brown color Becoz of taniic acid.

Thanks, I will look for Guava and Banana leaves, cause they will be easier to find in Delhi. Teak leaves I think I can arrange...from someone.

Almond leaves can be hard to source in Delhi unless you know about a tree somewhere, buying online can be expensive.
