HOB Vs Top Filter.
I do not understand why people prefer HOB filter so much and dislike top filter.
I guess both works in a same principle.
Please help me differentiate them. I had top filter but people told me to get rid of it asap and buy IPF or most preferred HOB.
why HOB is preferred and Top filter aint?

Two things I don't like about top filters are:
1) its pump is inside the tank.
2) it makes the placement of light a bit tricky and sometimes impossible.

I do not like top filter as well. my main point is why do people prefer hob filter when top and hob filter works almost the same.
co2 loss isn't in hob filter?

Re: HOB Vs Top Filter.
If u r not having a planted set up then Top filter is the most effective and cheap filter u can have .......I consider it better than HOB as it has more space to pack with media ......
Incase of Top filter CO2 loss will be more in compare to HOB. In HOB water simply overflows into the tank. But, in case of Top filter water travels through different media resulting more contact with air and more air exchange ....resulting more CO2 loss

I guess the above two points are reason enough to prefer HOB.sushant wrote:Two things I don't like about top filters are:

People normally dont reject top filter because of those reason. People say co2 loss is heavy with top filter, but even hob filter work exactly same as top filter then why hob us preferred?
I am not asking about looks and placement.

ok, in what terms do you want the comparison? CO2 dissolution, areation, price, weight, size, flow, looks(no?), availability, warranty, quality?azim26 wrote:People normally dont reject top filter because of those reason. I am not asking about looks and placement.
For example some people keeping aquarium beautifully neat is the motive, for some keeping fish in most comfortable way is motive. So similarly its a personal choice to have HOB OR top filter.
Hope I got your point? and dint confuse you.

Just and just co2 dissolution and co2 loss.

Re: HOB Vs Top Filter.
CO2 dissolution- dont think either will effect.
CO2 loss- both should be nearly same, I havent done any scientific study on conc loss etc. But still if you modify their orientations than conventional way, both do better, i.e. to not let water to form ripples and not churning it much exposing to air.
So, you think you picked a wrong suggestion somewhere? Infact IPF is better than the above two in terms of lessening the CO2 loss.
