Unread post by vikas »

Has anyone tried bamboo plants available in the market in the aquarium? Or in the pot with ada or contro soil. Just wanted to know how all these things affect their growth..

Bamboo plants are not suitable for aquarium. They are toxic for fishes.

You can buy in good rate from Bhogal. There are many shops who sells Bamboo.

You can grow them in normal light in room. The soil should be wet for good growth. You can also grow it without soil in water.

Calling them Bamboo is just marketing. The correct name is Dracaena sanderiana, and the plant is not related to Bamboos at all (monocots) being a dicot.

They are poisonous to fish due to the toxins leached into the water by their roots, and are not able to survive in water for longer than a few months. It is true that we can fail to keep even 100% genuine aquatic plants alive for longer than 6 months, for one reason or another. But keeping a Dracaena underwater is like feeding a Betta with chocolate: unsuitable from the very start. The betta takes a month or two to starve to death but the kid giving it chocolate will think it likes the chocolate! That is why people keep buying these 'bamboos' , losing them, buying again, losing them again.

Shopkeepers make a lot of money selling them it is true, but most people who buy them keep them like living toys. they dont care if they live or die after a few months. the same plant planted in a pot with soil will live as long as any plant.

you can use a money plant (epipremnum aureum) for the same purpose. use the all green form, grows great with nitrates in the aquarium water. Vijendra Suryavanshi is growing Cyperus alternifolius very well. you can try that plant too. it is very common in pots in Delhi.
