the post is highly technical n theoretical.
can you simplify on practical aspects.
bcoz if i'm right then increasing light increase all the activities.
plant will require more CO2 , they would consume more fertilizers and if this two do not measure right then one can expect an algae outbreak.
Now what i could understand by your post is to alter UV-B, how is that achieved ?
Now if ph is to increased then water becomes alkaline , which itself isn't healthy condition for overall plant growth !!

Need u to explain this again. your expertise would be beneficial to all.

I am not sure if Scorpio meant that we should have an alkaline pH. I think he meant that excess nitrates push down your pH and you should avoid the downswing in pH.

I am also not very sure if nitrates themselves reduce redness. More nitrogen means newer growth but that can be green or red depending on the plants whims, needs or genes. High light with co2 should force good growth which should consume nitrates AND cause redness. Therefore the association of redness and low nitrates. Possibly.

If on the other hand your plant is starved of nitrogen then chlorophyll production is decreased and that will increase redness. In this situation you do have a red plant but not very healthy. One can however manage to have plants red and healthy.

An experiment with high lighting and high nitrates is in order. But maybe that's a recipe for an algal disaster.

BTW Scorpios post is a very good summary. It is possible to get much more technical on this topic and many planted nuts love to get technical on such delightful topics.

Here are some of my Red plants http://aquapetz.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=1107. It is the practical approach.

In practical, I can say that keep a balance between light, CO2 and fertilizers. Change water frequently to control nitrate. In result plants will be red.

Dr. Deepesh has already posted what you want to know. I am also agree with him.

my point here is your 2nd point....
how can stress increase redness in plant ??
if this is true i will not want my plants to be red rather i prefer green.....

hows your Barclaya longifolia growing ?? still the same ?

here is the pic of my Barclaya longifolia, planted 6 days back and went on touring when i was back was surprised to see the growth....

Barclaya longifolia is one of the most easy to maintain red plants. When a bulb produce new leaves, plant consumes nutrients from the bulb. So they will always comes out red. But later the plant, needs nutrients to maintain red color.

Unfortunately at present I don't have any Barclaya longifolia.

UV-B means Ultraviolet B. The wavelength of UV-B in range of 315 – 280 nm. Uultraviolet LEDs are available but dont know the source.
