How to broke Slate rocks?

Any body knows how to broke slate rocks in desired shapes?
When I strikes hammer, they broke in layers.

Need advice.

how can you know in advance what will look good? if u do, then the best drifwood would be all plastic. we all know the most beautiful tanks use driftwood from nature, not plastic moulds in chinese factories. The best shapes are random, and if u break it, what you get will be pure chance. if u cut it with a 'cutter' the chances of finding what is really to your taste are close to zero, they will look sliced.

in your place, i would put the slate in a jute bag or similar, hit it with a hammer so that the finer bits dont scatter. And then take my pic of what chance offers me..

they break in layers only, or you ll need a special machinery, hammer will not help at all

So it is best to throw away the idea to broke the slates. This time I will choose the shapes of slates on the shop.

A wood (3 foot). Complete wood will be use in 3footer aquarium. Will grow Java fern and anubias on the wood.

the rocks have excellent contour's in em'..! it would be shame to break em' to be honest!
